Wal-Mart Backs Off Indianapolis Store
The Chicago Tribune: June 08, 2004
GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Wal-Mart has dropped plans for a supercenter at one site near this Indianapolis suburb but said it still hopes to build elsewhere in town.
An attorney for the Arkansas-based retailer announced the decision Monday at a City Council meeting attended by more than 120 people.
"Wal-Mart has decided ... this was not the place. This shows, in this case, they're willing to work with the community," said Steve Huddleston, an attorney for the company.
Wal-Mart had asked the suburb to annex the site and rezone it for a proposed 212,000-square-foot store. Huddleston said Wal-Mart now would seek another Greenwood site.
Opponents had said the proposal would create traffic problems. Wal-Mart, which has more than 3,500 stores nationwide, wants to build up to 10 new stores in the Indianapolis area in the next three years.
"Very early on we were told, 'You can't take on Wal-Mart,'" said Lynn Gray, an attorney for the opposition group White River Citizens United. "This proves you can."
