Founding Charter and Mission of the Linton South Harpeth Association
In the early spring of 2004 several people in this area began to hear rumors about the sale of the three hundred acre property at the corner of Highway 96 and Highway 100. They had heard that the land was being sold to a developer who wanted to build a Wal Mart or other large commercial venture. Calls were made to the the Planning Commission of Davidson County, and the Planning Commission of Williamson County. Yes, these commissioners had heard the rumors, but there was nothing concrete. Neighbors contacted the Harpeth Valley Water Company. Yes, they had heard of this but had no plans to extend the sewer. Others spoke with the officials in Fairview. They had been contacted on this issue and knew quite a few details. Someone was contacted by or called Charlie Tygard, the councilman in Nashville for the Davidson County section of this property. Mr. Tygard acknowledged that he had definitely been approached by the purchasing developer, Mickey Mitchell, about building a Wal Mart. It was very preliminary, but it was enough to galvanize citizens of the are to action.
A group composed of community activists, environmentalists, and home owners met and proposed a plan to protect all of us from unwanted development and destruction of the way of life. This led to environmental studies, paid for by one of the group, and a large network of communication to the citizens of our area. People not previously acquainted with one another rushed to volunteer their time and expertise to set up a meeting and get the word out. Fliers were designed and printed, a telephone and email network was established, signs were made, the media was contacted, and the first meeting was held in the historic South Harpeth Civic Club.
The citizens of the Linton South Harpeth Area began to raise funds to be used to protect the area and continued environmental and legal studies. They forged ties and discovered the feeling of neighborhood again. We all love our beautiful land and way of life and we will protect in accordance with our rights as protected by state and federal laws. This includes maintaining the Sub Area Zoning plan enacted only 3 years ago.
The citizens of this area realize that Linton South Harpeth will continue to grow, but we desire planned and controlled growth that will take into account the river, the creeks, the wildlife, the night sky, and the peace and quiet.
Please join us in this effort. Send a note to Linton South Harpeth to receive e-mail on current activity.
Remember everyone counts !!!!
